A LONG TIME OF LESS FRESH AIR

Air, in my opinion is the most important substance for survival best known to man. Actually, air is interdependent on land and water, the basic components of the environment. Air is an invisible gaseous mixture of oxygen and nitrogen surrounding the earth. And it might be in danger. Technically, a colleague of oxygen and nitrogen called carbon dioxide is angry. Carbon dioxide is absorbed by plant during photosynthesis and released by humans during respiration. Kinda cool. But clever environmentalists, the scientists, the ones that are actually in the labs and plotting graphs are saying carbon dioxide has become erratic.

According to a Climate Central report, a historic event occurred in September 2016 and will be long remembered as the time atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) refused to drop when it should be at its lowest point. Presently, atmospheric CO2 is above 400 parts per million. Scientifically, a low point means the transition from summer to fall season is on, whereby vegetation in their growth stage exhibits a decreased uptake of carbon dioxide and increased release of carbon dioxide. As Fall elapses, leaves fall and decompose then releases carbon dioxide from soils into the atmosphere. So what has been found is that we will be living in a 400ppm world for a long time, many decades to be specific, well not really specific, as no figure has been indicated.

But be sure will be getting a lot of warmth in the world coupled with the carbon dioxide committed to the atmosphere since the start of the industrial revolution. Also, the planet has surmounted the 1.5°C (2.7°F) warming threshold, hopefully, world leaders will take action on emission reduction to avoid a 2°C of warming. Bearing in mind that carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, although, Earth's biosphere is dependant on atmospheric CO2 for its existence. Very complicated.

Policymakers outlined that 2°C is a safe threshold for climate change, but ideally, it still spells doom for low-lying small islands and the rest of the world. If extreme heat waves, coastal flooding and coral reef extinction occurs in developing countries with little or no emergency measures, the consequences will be devastating as it has always been.

World leaders, even environmental and human right activist should be reminded that climate change is real, the air we breathe in is in danger and our future is getting bleaker. The suggestion isn't to bring industrialisation to a halt, which might NEVER happen. Suffice it to say that climate change related issues should be tackled as fast as they emerge. Developed countries have sufficient resources to do so and should engage developing countries as well. Everything in life isn't a TUG OF WAR. The tug of war should be for survival for all not survival for some.

An Igbo adage says: 'Anaghi agwa ochinti n'agha esula'. Meaning: 'You can't tell a deaf man that war has begun'. Surely he will see for himself what is happening around his environment. Nobody will tell him the right action to take, because he will act accordingly.
